Christ Church, located in the historic Old City neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is one of the most architecturally and historically significant houses of worship in the United States. Completed in its grandest form between 1727 and 1744, this stunning structure was the first parish of the Church of England in Pennsylvania and is widely considered a masterpiece of American Georgian architecture. Designed by physician and amateur architect John Kearsley, the church is modeled closely after the London churches of Sir Christopher Wren. The exterior features beautifully patterned Flemish bond brickwork, large arched windows that flood the sanctuary with natural light, and classic symmetrical lines. Its most defining exterior feature, the towering 196-foot wooden steeple added in 1754 with financing from a lottery organized by Benjamin Franklin, made it the tallest structure in North America for over half a century. Known as ""The Nation’s Church,"" Christ Church was the primary house of worship for many of America’s founding fathers. George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Betsy Ross regularly occupied its pews, and the building played host to numerous Revolutionary-era services.
