Namirembe Cathedral, also referred to as St.Pauls Cathedral, perched atop Namirembe Hill in Kampala, Uganda, is the oldest and most iconic Anglican place of worship in the country. Serving as the seat of the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, it has been a center of faith, heritage, and national identity since its consecration in 1919. Constructed between 1915 and 1919, Namirembe Cathedral was built using locally sourced materials, including red bricks that give it its distinctive appearance. Its design blends elements of early 20th-century British ecclesiastical architecture with Ugandan building traditions, creating a structure that is both historically significant and culturally resonant. Over the past century, Namirembe Cathedral has stood witness to the spiritual life of the nation. From colonial rule through independence, it has been a site for national prayer, major religious events, and quiet reflection. Its large dome, spacious interior, and prominent location make it not only a landmark of Kampala’s skyline but also a lasting symbol of Uganda’s Christian heritage.
