The Panthéon in Paris is an iconic monument located in the Latin Quarter of Paris, France. Originally designed as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve, it has since become a mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens.

The Panthéon’s design was commissioned to Jacques-Germain Soufflot with the intention to combine the lightness and brightness of the Gothic cathedral structure with classical principles. Construction began in 1758 and went through several phases, finally completed in 1790. It showcases a facade reminiscent of a Greek temple, adorned with Corinthian columns, signifying France's dedication to the principles of reason and enlightenment.

This architectural masterpiece is renowned for its neoclassical style, embodying the ideals of the Enlightenment. Its majestic dome, inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, dominates the Parisian skyline, serving as a beacon of French national pride and secularism. The Panthéon’s interior is equally impressive, with a vast and open space illuminated by natural light, featuring a coffered dome with an oculus at the center.

The Panthéon stands not only as a burial place for heroes of the French nation but also as a symbol of the country’s artistic and intellectual achievements. Its transformation from a church to a mausoleum reflects France's turbulent history and the shifts between monarchical, revolutionary, and republican phases. Each element, from the richly decorated facade to the intricate floor plan, tells a story of reverence, revolution, and the enduring legacy of those who shaped French history and culture.

The Panthéon is also the resting place of Louis Braille, the inventor of a writing system for blind people.
