The Alþingishúsið, home to Iceland’s parliament, stands in the heart of Reykjavík as a cornerstone of the nation’s democracy. Since its completion in 1881, this historic structure has housed the Alþingi, one of the world’s oldest parliaments, tracing its origins back to 930 AD.
Designed by Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl, Alþingishúsið is a striking example of 19th-century neoclassical architecture, constructed from Icelandic hewn basalt. Its solid stone façade and understated elegance reflect both the resilience and independence of the Icelandic people.
Over the years, the building has undergone various modifications to accommodate the evolving needs of the government while maintaining its historical significance. Today, it remains a symbol of Iceland’s democratic heritage and a focal point of political life in the nation.
