The Virginia State Capitol, located in Richmond, Virginia, has served as the seat of the state government since 1788. As one of the most historically significant buildings in the United States, it has been the site of crucial legislative decisions that have shaped both Virginia and the nation.  

Designed by Thomas Jefferson in collaboration with French architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, the Capitol is an early example of neoclassical architecture in America. Its design was inspired by the Maison Carrée, an ancient Roman temple in Nîmes, France, reflecting Jefferson’s vision of democracy rooted in classical ideals.  

Over the centuries, the Virginia State Capitol has undergone expansions and renovations, including the addition of legislative wings and preservation efforts to maintain its historic character. Despite these changes, it remains a powerful symbol of governance and democracy in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
